Modest Grasshopper
Agroecotettix modestus
This record describes Agroecotettix modestus (species). Recorded family: Acrididae. Recorded order: Orthoptera.
Identification and Appearance
Brownish or grayish, mottled darker, with parallel dark lines on top of the pronotum; red on hind tibiae and inner face of hind femora; short oval widely separated tegmina. Regarding the two subspecies in Texas, the following is taken from the original description of A. modestus subspecies crypsidomus at Hebard, July 25, 1922 , Transactions of the American Entomological Society, vol. XLVIII: 49 ; 'New Genera and Species of Melanopli Found within the United States and Canada' (Orthoptera; Acrididae). Part IV. The subspecies aristus was described from Uvalde, Texas in the same publication. The present geographic race is separated from A. modestus aristus, here described, by the average smaller size and less swollen pronotum. Males are further separated by the shorter cerci, the forks of which are much shorter, with the external arm short- er than the internal arm. Females are less readily distingished by the proportionately smaller tegmina, which are separated by a moderate interspace. Compared with the type of A. modestus modestus Bruner, a female, individuals of that sex of the present race are distin- guished by their smaller size and red coloration of the distal portions of the caudal tibiae. The slightly more swollen pro- notum and form and position of the tegmina show a development approximately intermediate between that of tu. modestus and m. aristus. In this publication the subspecies crypsidomus was examined from: Sanderson, Terrell County, Texas, USA Marathon, Brewster County, Texas Garden Spring Persimmon Gap Avery Canyon, Grapevine Hills Neville Spring Moss Well, Chisos Mountains Lost Mine Peak, Chisos Mountains Canyon behind Pulliam Bluff, Chisos Mountains Pine Mountain, Davis Mountains Maguires Ranch, upper Limpia Canyon, Davis Mountains Quitman Mountains, El Paso County, Texas Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico Here are photos of a paratype female of A. modestus subspecies crypsidomus

About Grasshoppers, Crickets, Katydids: the wider group
Order-level background for Orthoptera, the group containing Agroecotettix modestus. Species-specific details appear above.
Group overview
Orthoptera includes ~28,000 described species of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids. Desert locusts can form swarms covering 460 square miles containing up to 80 million individuals per square kilometer.
Ecological role of the group
Grasshoppers and crickets are a primary food source for birds, reptiles, and small mammals. Cricket farming is a growing industry - crickets require 12× less feed than cattle to produce the same amount of protein, using 2,000× less water.
Economic and practical significance of the group
A single large locust swarm can consume the same amount of food in one day as 35,000 people. The 2019-2021 East Africa locust crisis affected food security for 42 million people across multiple countries. Global crop losses from locusts can reach billions annually.
