Editorial and source policy

Reference guides

Each guide states the species or group it covers and lists references for further reading. We use university extension, public-health and natural-history sources. Regional observations are not automatically worldwide facts. A source about one species is not evidence for every species in its family.

The update date records a content revision, not a new scientific discovery or a medical review. These guides are not presented as independently reviewed by an entomologist or clinician.

Imported directory records

Directory pages combine imported names, classification, descriptions and photographs. Coverage varies by record. A source-count badge reports how many sources were recorded; it is not a verification badge. Taxonomic names and classifications may differ between references or change over time.

Photographs carry their recorded scientific names and available attribution. We do not claim that every image or identification has been independently checked. Some records contain only classification or a photograph; these should not be read as complete identification guides.

Photographs

Published directory photographs have an individual source and permission record. Current replacement photographs use source-declared CC0 or CC BY licenses. Credits identify the photographer, source observation and license. A source observation is evidence of the recorded identification, not an independent expert review by InsectLibrary.

Evidence and corrections

Source information is retained with the underlying records. Public guides list supporting references, and photographs carry their available credits. Imported terms can be incomplete or ambiguous and should be read in the context of the surrounding record. Limited records can remain available for browsing even when they are excluded from search-engine indexing.

For a correction, include the page URL, the exact statement or image in question, and a reliable reference through the publisher contact available on our Gumroad publisher page. A useful identification report also includes location, date and clear photographs.

Bites, stings and pest management

A website photograph cannot diagnose a bite or a medical condition. Seek a qualified clinician for symptoms and a veterinarian for animal health. Local extension services and qualified pest professionals can help with identification and site-specific management. Follow current local rules and product labels.

Formatting source information

We may group descriptive terms or body-part descriptions into tables, remove stray quotation marks, and avoid displaying the same passage twice. These presentation changes preserve the underlying source record. A table label is an aid to reading, not an additional expert determination.

Descriptions of males and females, measurements, and regional qualifiers should stay with the statements they qualify. General terms such as “big” or “western” are not converted into numeric measurements or a confirmed geographic range.

How links connect topics

Classification links lead from a profile to its family and order. Related profiles offer comparisons within the recorded group. Guide links connect a practical subject with directory records that fall within its stated scope. A related link is a route for further reading, not a claim that two animals are interchangeable or have the same behavior.

Submitting a useful correction

1. Copy the exact page address and identify the statement, name, or photograph.
2. Explain what appears incorrect and provide a supporting reference where possible.
3. For a photograph or copyright concern, identify the image and the relevant credit or permission issue.

We assess reports against the available record and references. Conflicting evidence may require further research; a submission does not establish that a proposed identification is correct.
