Phytomyza paraciliata

This record describes Phytomyza paraciliata (species). Recorded family: Agromyzidae. Recorded order: Diptera.

Identification and Appearance

Phytomyza paraciliata - Phytomyza paraciliata

The larvae of the Agromyzid fly Phytomyza paraciliata mine the leaves of Leucanthemum species such as Oxeye Daisy and Shasta Daisy. The mine is initially long and linear, but then doubles back. Initially the mine appears on the underside of the leaf but later appears on upper surface. The frass appears in discrete grains along a loose string, gradually become more dense as the larva grows. A number of species produce similar mines on these plants so the larva must be reared to the adult stage and then males can be identified from an examination of the genitalia. Females are very difficult to identify. See the National Agromyzidae Recording Scheme webpage for this species for further details of puparium and adult insect. The leafmine is indistinguishable from the mines of Chromatomyia horticola, Chromatomyia syngenesiae, Phytomyza leucanthemi, and Phytomyza tanaceti so the adult must be reared and examined. ref.: Warrington, B.P. Females are difficult to determine. Host plant(s): Leucanthemum species such as Oxeye Daisy and Shasta Daisy Click on the ' further details ' link in the 'Description' section above. Recorded status

In Britain this species is classed as pRDB 2. The Stoney Stanton record was only the 7th confirmed record for this species held in the national database - and when recorded in 2020 was the most northerley, although this is no longer the case.

About Flies: the wider group

Order-level background for Diptera, the group containing Phytomyza paraciliata. Species-specific details appear above.

Group overview

Diptera includes over 150,000 described species of flies, mosquitoes, and midges. Mosquitoes are the deadliest animal on Earth (CDC). Malaria alone causes ~249 million cases and over 608,000 deaths annually, mostly children under 5 (WHO). Vector-borne diseases account for over 17% of all infectious diseases, causing 700,000+ deaths per year.

Ecological role of the group

Despite their disease impact, flies are critical decomposers and pollinators. Hoverflies alone pollinate hundreds of crop and wildflower species. Flies are also the primary food source for many birds, bats, and fish. Forensic entomology relies heavily on fly species for crime scene analysis.

Economic and practical significance of the group

In the U.S., vector-borne disease cases tripled between 2004-2016, with over 640,000 cases reported in that period (CDC). Tickborne diseases doubled from 22,000 to 48,000 annual reports. Globally, mosquito-borne diseases cost billions in healthcare and lost productivity.

Recorded sources for this group: WHO, CDC, PNAS. Imported estimates may describe particular regions or reporting periods.
