Sweet Potato Leaf Beetle
Typophorus nigritus
This record describes Typophorus nigritus (species). Recorded family: Chrysomelidae. Recorded order: Coleoptera.
Identification and Appearance

irridescent, tapering pronotum, and destinctive femora Of the approximately 50 genera and more than 1,000 species of Convolvulaceae, I. batatas is the only crop plant of major importance. The domestication of sweet potato occurred in either Central or South America. In Central America, domesticated sweet potatoes were present at least 5,000 years ago. - Wiki

Life History
damage to Sweet Potato ( Ipomoea batatas ) •Adults feed mainly on the foliage leaving large holes in the lamina of the leaf. •Damage to the sweet potato roots is caused mainly by larval stage that create shallow tunnels on the surface of the roots/tubers. •Farmers report losses up to 90% (Kundun, 2021)

About Primitive Winged Insects: the wider group
Order-level background for Coleoptera, the group containing Typophorus nigritus. Species-specific details appear above.
Group overview
Coleoptera is the largest order of insects with over 400,000 described species, representing ~25% of all known animal species and ~40% of all insects. In the U.S. alone, nearly 30,000 beetle species have been identified.
Ecological role of the group
Beetles are prominent decomposers, especially in forests, breaking down dead wood and recycling nutrients. As predators, they reduce populations of pest insects. Many species are also important pollinators of flowering plants.
Economic and practical significance of the group
Beetles have major economic significance: leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) and weevils (Curculionoidea) are among the most destructive agricultural pests globally, costing billions annually, while predatory species like ladybugs provide natural pest control.
