Trirhabda luteocincta
This record describes Trirhabda luteocincta (species). Recorded family: Chrysomelidae. Recorded order: Coleoptera.
Identification and Appearance

Elytra frequently metallic green, blue, purple or purple-black, infrequently vittate. Underside of abdomen dark (green) with metallic luster, densely hairy. Pronotal spots large, with metallic luster, median spot wedge-shaped. Occipital plaga metallic-green, rounded anteriorly and broadly widened posteriorly to cover entire hind edge of head (see Fig. 18 of Blake ). (Adapted from Hogue ) In the principal references for Trirhabda by Blake, Hougue and others, T. luteocincta is characterized as a coastal central to southern California species with host plants Applopappus (=Hazardia) squarrosa and Artemesia californica , the latter known by the common name California sagebrush. However, a 1982 paper by Patrick O'Brien & Peter Atsatt on the life history of T. sericotrachyla found that: Circumscriptions of Happlopappus have been revised and the species formerly known as Haplopappus venetus ssp. vernonioides and H. palmeri are now referred to as Isocoma menziesii var. vernoniodes and Ericameria palmeri , respectively. These two species are present in the coastal areas of southern California where the vast majority of T. luteocincta records occur. Note that none of the 4 host plant species mentioned above occurs beyond California (including Baja California)...so it's unclear what the host plant would be for presumed records in UT, AZ, and/or NM. [Note from A.S. on 10/28/18: I suspect records of T. luteocincta from UT, AZ, and/or NM may be mis-identified as such.]

About Primitive Winged Insects: the wider group
Order-level background for Coleoptera, the group containing Trirhabda luteocincta. Species-specific details appear above.
Group overview
Coleoptera is the largest order of insects with over 400,000 described species, representing ~25% of all known animal species and ~40% of all insects. In the U.S. alone, nearly 30,000 beetle species have been identified.
Ecological role of the group
Beetles are prominent decomposers, especially in forests, breaking down dead wood and recycling nutrients. As predators, they reduce populations of pest insects. Many species are also important pollinators of flowering plants.
Economic and practical significance of the group
Beetles have major economic significance: leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) and weevils (Curculionoidea) are among the most destructive agricultural pests globally, costing billions annually, while predatory species like ladybugs provide natural pest control.
