Sericophanes ocellatus 0

Sericophanes ocellatus

This record describes Sericophanes ocellatus (species). Recorded family: Miridae. Recorded order: Hemiptera.

Identification and Appearance

Knight (New and Noteworthy Forms of North American Miridae (Hemip.), 1917) says of the types: Length to tip of membrane, 2.6 mm.; length of pronotum .43 mm., width at base .71 mm., apex .37 mm.; head, width across the eyes .6o mm., width of vertex .25 mm.; color of head, thorax, legs and abdomen, yellowish brown, or dilute cinnamomeus of Reuter. The ocellate spot on the clavus and the pruinose bands across the corium are quite similar to noctuans [a synonym of heidemanni] but the ground color is lighter. He then gives the length of his S. noctuans (=heidemanni) as 3.6 mm. So it seems S. ocellatus has lighter coloration and a smaller body size, in addition to differences in genitalia (illustrated in: Carvalho, J.C.M. and L.A.A. Costa.. Mirideos neotropicais, CCXCII: revisao do genero Sericophanes Reuter na America do Sul e America Central (Hemiptera). Revista Brasileira de Biologia 48: 897-909). Type Locality: Texas ( Belfarge )

About True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies: the wider group

Order-level background for Hemiptera, the group containing Sericophanes ocellatus. Species-specific details appear above.

Group overview

Hemiptera (true bugs) includes over 80,000 described species across cicadas, aphids, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and bed bugs. Aphids alone cost global agriculture an estimated $2.5 billion annually in crop losses.

Ecological role of the group

Many Hemiptera are essential food sources for birds and predatory insects. Cicadas provide massive nutrient pulses during emergence events - a single Brood X emergence can involve trillions of individuals across 15 states.

Economic and practical significance of the group

The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) caused $37 million in apple crop losses in a single year in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Bed bug infestations in the U.S. increased by 500% between 2001-2010, costing the hotel industry hundreds of millions annually.
