Ossiannilssonola possibly undescribed affinity rossi
Ossiannilssonola aff-rossi
This record describes Ossiannilssonola aff-rossi (species). Recorded family: Cicadellidae. Recorded order: Hemiptera.
Identification and Appearance

This species is currently referred to by Hamilton & Chandler 2017 as Ossiannilssonola rossi , but it may be a different species as the genitalia, range, and morphology differ slightly from Ossiannilssonola rossi sensu stricto. This species is found in New England with established populations in New Hampshire and potentially Massachusetts. Before collection recorded in Hamilton & Chandler 2017, the range of O. rossi was understood to be in the midwest. Range extension in this genus is not uncommon, however, and the slight differences may be a result of range variation. Don Chandler states that he is opting to label these specimens as Ossiannilssonola rossi as they are closest to that species, until more work is done to understand the species. Furthermore, O. rossi is described as having a dark abdominal dorsum, while the author's specimen from Massachusetts seems to lack pigmentation on the dorsum. This may be due to the specimen being teneral-the pigmentation of New Hampshire specimens is yet to be confirmed. In terms of the male genitalia, Chandler told the author: Specimens from NH placed as O. rossi have a more developed process on the apical split ends of the aedeagus than they do in the figure by Christianson of the species from the type locality. This page is being made to hold Ossiannilssonola specimens from New England identified as Ossiannilssonola rossi through dissection until more experts can weigh in on the subject.

About True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies: the wider group
Order-level background for Hemiptera, the group containing Ossiannilssonola aff-rossi. Species-specific details appear above.
Group overview
Hemiptera (true bugs) includes over 80,000 described species across cicadas, aphids, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and bed bugs. Aphids alone cost global agriculture an estimated $2.5 billion annually in crop losses.
Ecological role of the group
Many Hemiptera are essential food sources for birds and predatory insects. Cicadas provide massive nutrient pulses during emergence events - a single Brood X emergence can involve trillions of individuals across 15 states.
Economic and practical significance of the group
The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) caused $37 million in apple crop losses in a single year in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Bed bug infestations in the U.S. increased by 500% between 2001-2010, costing the hotel industry hundreds of millions annually.
