Oak Leaf Phylloxera

Phylloxera glabra

This record describes Phylloxera glabra (species). Recorded family: Phylloxeridae. Recorded order: Hemiptera.

Identification and Appearance

Oak Leaf Phylloxera - Phylloxera glabra

Phylloxera glabra fundatrices (over-wintering females) feeding on oak leaves in spring cause the leaf edges to curl inwards and become slightly thickened, causing a gall. Feeding by later generations causes necrotic spots on the leaves. The yellowish orange adult apterae feed on the undersides of the leaves. The Phylloxera glabra adult body length is only 0.7 to 0.85 mm. Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters. Phylloxera glabra lives without host alternation on oak leaves (mainly Pedunculate Oak - Quercus robur ). Female Phylloxera glabra surround themselves with concentric circles of their eggs. Status in Britain is difficult to determine due to lack of records.

About True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies: the wider group

Order-level background for Hemiptera, the group containing Phylloxera glabra. Species-specific details appear above.

Group overview

Hemiptera (true bugs) includes over 80,000 described species across cicadas, aphids, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and bed bugs. Aphids alone cost global agriculture an estimated $2.5 billion annually in crop losses.

Ecological role of the group

Many Hemiptera are essential food sources for birds and predatory insects. Cicadas provide massive nutrient pulses during emergence events - a single Brood X emergence can involve trillions of individuals across 15 states.

Economic and practical significance of the group

The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) caused $37 million in apple crop losses in a single year in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Bed bug infestations in the U.S. increased by 500% between 2001-2010, costing the hotel industry hundreds of millions annually.
