False Milkweed Bug
Lygaeus turcicus
This record describes Lygaeus turcicus (species). Recorded family: Lygaeidae. Recorded order: Hemiptera.
Identification and Appearance

We're moving all these images to a new page based on the image from Ojibway cited below and the records from the North Carolina State University. Unfortunately we also found online images of the same creature listed as kalmii and images of kalmii listed as turcicus, so we can't be positive about this identification, but it will serve as a place holder till someone gets to the university to examine those specimens. But at least there does seem to be another valid species present in the US and it may be that this Ojibway reference has it correct! North Carolina has 14 specimens of turcicus and 128 of kalmii which seems to fit our distribution of images! is kalmii with large black heart shape on back and small red line on head. is turcicus with overlapping triangles on back and bright red T on head From what I can see, L. turcicus has a large Y-shaped reddish mark between the eyes that extends between the antennal bases and has an entirely dark elytral membrane without white edges or spots. L. kalmii has a smaller reddish mark on head with pale margins of elytral membrane which may or may not have white spots. The white markings seem to be more reliable than the reddish mark on the head. References: , . I think the species distinctions aren't that great and that a revision is probably needed (if it hasn't been done already). Comment by Brad Barnd, update: see for key to species Food plant seems to be false sunflower, Heliopsis helianthoides, rather than milkweeds.

About True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies: the wider group
Order-level background for Hemiptera, the group containing Lygaeus turcicus. Species-specific details appear above.
Group overview
Hemiptera (true bugs) includes over 80,000 described species across cicadas, aphids, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and bed bugs. Aphids alone cost global agriculture an estimated $2.5 billion annually in crop losses.
Ecological role of the group
Many Hemiptera are essential food sources for birds and predatory insects. Cicadas provide massive nutrient pulses during emergence events - a single Brood X emergence can involve trillions of individuals across 15 states.
Economic and practical significance of the group
The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) caused $37 million in apple crop losses in a single year in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Bed bug infestations in the U.S. increased by 500% between 2001-2010, costing the hotel industry hundreds of millions annually.
