This record describes Illinoia liriodendri (species). Recorded family: Aphididae. Recorded order: Hemiptera.

Identification and Appearance

Illinoia liriodendri - Illinoia liriodendri

The body length of an adult Illinoia liriodendri aptera is 1.7 to 2.5 mm. I. liriodendri apterae are spindle shaped and pale green, lightly dusted with wax. There are also yellowish and pink-red forms. For a more detailed description of this species please use the ‘Further info:’ link below. Please add good quality images to support your record, and also state the host plant. Illinoia liriodendri feeds on undersides of the leaves of Tulip-tree ( Liriodendron tulipifera ). Dense populations can build up resulting in large deposits of honeydew on the leaves. The aphids are restricted to the undersides of the leaves where, early in the season, the clusters of the nymphs can be found behind each of the adult viviparous females True status in Britain is difficult to determine due to lack of records. https://influentialpoints.com/Gallery/Illinoia_liriodendri_Tulip-tree_aphid.htm

About True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies: the wider group

Order-level background for Hemiptera, the group containing Illinoia liriodendri. Species-specific details appear above.

Group overview

Hemiptera (true bugs) includes over 80,000 described species across cicadas, aphids, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and bed bugs. Aphids alone cost global agriculture an estimated $2.5 billion annually in crop losses.

Ecological role of the group

Many Hemiptera are essential food sources for birds and predatory insects. Cicadas provide massive nutrient pulses during emergence events - a single Brood X emergence can involve trillions of individuals across 15 states.

Economic and practical significance of the group

The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) caused $37 million in apple crop losses in a single year in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Bed bug infestations in the U.S. increased by 500% between 2001-2010, costing the hotel industry hundreds of millions annually.
