Identification and lookalikes
Males have prominent forward-pointing horns; females lack them. The wing covers can be pale with dark spots, and the amount of dark coloring varies. Horn length is not the same measurement as body length.
Larvae and habitat
The larvae feed in decaying wood, contributing to decomposition. Adults occur in wooded areas and may appear at lights. These observations concern the eastern species rather than every tropical Hercules beetle.
What to do next
Leave decaying logs in suitable habitat where practical. Photograph the beetle without lifting it by the horns, and record the location to distinguish regional Dynastes species.
