Refer to Foord's description at the link below Most records of Hersiliidae in Florida, including many identified as Yabisi habanensis , are probably either M. uva or Iviraiva pachyura . The two confirmed Florida records of M. uva were collected and keyed out as specimens. Discussion by specialists on iNaturalist favor I. pachyura for some observations there; iNat has several observations of I. pachyura from its native range in South America, but zero verifiable observations of M. uva from either Florida or its native range in Africa. Photographers hoping to have their observations conclusively identified (without collecting and keying out the specimen) should attempt to get detailed photos of the eye arrangement; lateral views would probably be most useful, but dorsal ones might work if clear enough.

Habitat and Range

Habitat

In Africa known mainly from lowland forests, though the male was first described from a specimen collected in a grassland. Most observations in the US appear to have taken place on buildings and other artificial structures, but this may just reflect the spiders' being more conspicuous in these settings.

Geographic Range

Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but also found in two Florida counties so far: an adult male in N. Miami (Miami-Dade County) in 2008, and a juvenile in Davie (Broward County) in 2007. ~ GB Edwards 12/16/13

Species notes from the sources

Etymology: Author of the name: Foord. Year first published: 2008. The species name uva refers to the arrangement of the spermathecae in a shape reminiscent of a bunch of grapes

About Spiders: the wider group

Order-level background for Araneae, the group containing Murricia uva. Species-specific details appear above.

Group overview

As of 2023, 51,673 spider species in 136 families have been recorded, though an estimated 150,000 species exist. Spiders rank 7th in total species diversity among all organism orders. Only 0.5% of spider species pose any risk to human health.

Ecological role of the group

Spider venom contains complex peptides with diverse pharmacological activities, making them valuable for drug development research. Spiders produce up to 7 types of silk from specialized glands. Spider silk genes have been inserted into mammals and plants for biotech applications.

Economic and practical significance of the group

The global spider community kills an estimated 400-800 million tons of prey annually (2017 study). Spiders provide billions of dollars in natural pest control for agriculture. Spider silk is 5× stronger than steel of the same diameter, driving a biomaterials research industry.
