Liorhyssus hyalinus

This record describes Liorhyssus hyalinus (species). Recorded family: Rhopalidae. Recorded order: Hemiptera.

Identification and Appearance

Liorhyssus hyalinus - Liorhyssus hyalinus

Length 6.5-7.5mm. Similar to Rhopalus and Stictopleurus species but usually has a very long wing membrane, which extends well beyond the body. The colouratios is very variable: individual with body colour yellow, reddish, greyish-yellow to darker brown can be found. Often the forewing veins are reddish. Size and length of wing membrance is also variable. The pronotum does not have the small circles or partial circles that are seen on Stictopleurus . The metathorax (the side of the thorax above the hind legs) is divided by a furrow into two sections; the rear part is unpunctured and has a triangular upper lobe, so the metathorax looks as though it is in 3 parts, unlike Stictopleurus . Specimens wih shorter wing membranes have been found in VC55, and Stictopleurus abutilon may have similar yellow-red colouring and longer wing membranes that extend well beyond the abdomen. If in doubt, check the metathorax - the side of the thorax above the hind legs. Detailed photos required, clearly showing pronotum and wing membrane. Foodplants include storksbill and various Compositae. Considered Nationally Scarce but now increasing rapidly. There was a large influx of the species after the hot, dry summer of 2026 - previously it had not been recorded in VC55 https://www.britishbugs.org.uk/heteroptera/Rhopalidae/liorhyssus_hyalinus.html

About True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies: the wider group

Order-level background for Hemiptera, the group containing Liorhyssus hyalinus. Species-specific details appear above.

Group overview

Hemiptera (true bugs) includes over 80,000 described species across cicadas, aphids, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and bed bugs. Aphids alone cost global agriculture an estimated $2.5 billion annually in crop losses.

Ecological role of the group

Many Hemiptera are essential food sources for birds and predatory insects. Cicadas provide massive nutrient pulses during emergence events - a single Brood X emergence can involve trillions of individuals across 15 states.

Economic and practical significance of the group

The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) caused $37 million in apple crop losses in a single year in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Bed bug infestations in the U.S. increased by 500% between 2001-2010, costing the hotel industry hundreds of millions annually.
