Fire ants include several Solenopsis species. The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one important stinging pest; not every red ant is a fire ant.

Identification uses worker size variation, body features and location. Do not disturb a mound to provoke a response. Color and an itchy skin mark are not reliable species identifiers.

Bites versus stings

Fire ants can grip with their jaws and sting. A disturbed colony may expose someone to many stings. Risk is not determined simply by the size of an individual ant.

What to do next

Keep people and pets away from suspected nests and seek local extension or pest-management identification. Serious allergic symptoms after stings require emergency help. Management should follow local guidance and the label of any registered product.
